Doors 7:30pm, Show 8pm $30 adv / $35 DOS Tony Trischka is considered to be the consummate banjo artist and one of the most influential banjo players in the roots music world. For more than 50 years, his stylings have inspired a whole generation of bluegrass and acoustic musicians with the many voices he has brought to the instrument. He’s been nominated twice for Grammy awards, and has won numerous International Bluegrass Music Association awards including Banjo Player of the Year. Heralded as “a leading light of the New York bluegrass scene” by the New York Times, Georgia-born guitarist/singer Michael Daves has garnered attention for his work with Tony Trischka, Steve Martin, and Chris Thile, with whom he shares a Grammy nomination for their 2011 album Sleep With One Eye Open. Daves’ unruly interpretations of American roots music standards have won him a place of almost fanatical admiration as a "renegade traditionalist." Erik Alvar is one of NYC’s most formidable upright bassists, bringing together deep bluegrass feel with classical chops. He has toured with Billy Strings, Nefesh Mountain, Tony Trischka, Rebecca Frazier, The Roys, and Jim Hurst among others. Recorded on reel to reel tape over two afternoons at Holmes’ iconic Mississippi juke joint, the album was produced, recorded and mixed by Crosby, with a selection of original compositions, traditional repertoire and fully improvised songs. Crosby finds deep inspiration and spiritual refuge in Bentonia, where he has been mentored for six years by Holmes, the man who is widely regarded as the last living master of the style. Blending reverence for tradition with a modern, trance-inducing approach, Crosby's process is informed by diverse influences that include Indian raga, ambient music and post-punk rock. For Crosby, all these seemingly disparate threads weave together through the meditative power of the blues. With collaborators Grant Smith and Jay Scheffler, At the Blue Front captures a moving journey of self-discovery, resilience, and artistic clarity. “Playing with Jimmy,” Crosby says, “it’s the joy, it’s the learning, it’s the connection and transcendence and what feels to me like a fulfillment of life’s purpose.” “What first intrigued me about Ryan Lee Crosby is how rare he is on paper: a former English major and post-punk rocker who can channel 1930s Mississippi.” - Lauren Daley — WBUR/NPR Todd Albright is a country blues, twelve-string guitar player and vocalist based in Detroit, Michigan. Grounded in the pre-war era of the blues tradition (1880-1939), Todd is a mindful purveyor of blues history. His repertoire upholds musical pillars such as Blind Willie McTell, George Carter, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly. His life’s work continues the distinguished tradition of the very roots of American music as told by the African American musicians who created it. Todd Albright joined Jack White’s Third Man Records in 2016. Todd's vigorous, gritty and soulful performances are accompanied by stories of the masters and a deep intuitive sense of respect for craft, providing audiences with a meaningful experience while creating a transcendent moment. One of the top blues guitarists in the world, Todd is the only contemporary twelve string player in his genre. Todd's first full-length LP, Fourth Floor Visitor, was released by Jett Plastic Recordings out of Detroit, Michigan (2017). His latest album, Detroit Twelve String: Blues & Rags, is out now on Third Man Records (2017). His forthcoming third album is set to be released by Third Man Records. " Many musicians can cop the notes played by blues and ragtime greats, but few contemporary guitarists are as successful at conveying the unscripted energy and driving feel of this music as Todd Albright." - Acoustic Guitar Magazine

Learning Banjo Tunes on the Fly with Anna Roberts-Gevalt - A Workshop
A Workshop with Anna Roberts-Gevalt Saturday, November 1, 11 AM - 1 PM Often, we learn by slowing things down, breaking tunes down into small parts and gradually speeding up, However, for this class, we're going to approach things from the opposite direction, and focus on sharpening the skills of learning tunes "at speed" - on the fly! This is a real-world skill set it's great to have when you are a jam setting, listening to a recording, or learning a tune from a fiddler without hearing a banjo "version" of it. It can be stressful and overwhelming to try to join in when you have no idea how the tune goes! Anna will break down some of the steps and skills for this process, including: - identifying common patterns/fingerings in the different tunings (and patterns to practice at home!) - listening skills that help you understand what you are hearing -- keeping track of (and remembering) the different parts of a tune - making a simple bare-bones version of a tune when it's new (and how to gradually add detail to it!) We'll also work on some background rhythm licks and chords to play/support the fiddler with as you're figuring the tune out. To inquire about scholarship/financial aid, please email lynette@jalopytheatre.org. The Jalopy Theatre is fully ADA accessible, including wheelchair-accessible bathrooms. Expanding Your Singing Voice with Joy Askew - A Workshop
Expanding Your Singing Voice - A Workshop with Joy Askew Sunday November 2, 11 am - 1 pm Your voice leads a song! Renowned vocal coach and singer Joy Askew joins us for a workshop that covers many aspects of vocal technique, from the nuts and bolts of vocal production to vocal health to how to deliver a song with expression and confidence, leading everyone in a journey of awareness. Joy's approach draws on the strength of embodied singing, using gravity and movement to trigger freedom and lightness in the body, freeing the throat, tongue, and jaw, and helping singers take their sound from a whisper to a roar. You'll experiment with how your voice resonates best, try exercises to stretch to places you thought you couldn't reach, and work towards freeing up difficulties that challenge flexibility in singing. Find the true sound of your own voice and make it work for you! Participants will work primarily as a group, but there will be also time for those interested to share a song and work one-on-one with Joy within the group setting. If you'd like to share a solo song, please email Joy at joyaskew@gmail.com . Joy Askew (https://www.joyaskew.com/) has enjoyed a stellar career playing alongside music icons like Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, Joe Jackson, Rodney Crowell, Jack Bruce, and Quincy Jones. She has performed with her own band on stages from CBGBs to festivals in the UK, USA, Japan, and Europe, and has opened for David Bowie and for David Byrne. Along the way, she has sung in a choir featured on an EP by Sufjan Stevens, collaborated with a British brass band, and released a downtempo jazz electronica album. photo by Tomek Miernowski Scholarship funds are available. Smyrnëka and Rebetika with Carol Freeman - A Workshop
Smyrnëka and Rebetika Workshop with Carol Freeman Sunday November 2nd, 2-4 pm Songs of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s Urban Greek ala Turka Cafe Amans and Hashish Dens Sing Makam, Intricate Ornamentation, and Uneven Rhythms Sing with Increased Comfort, Clarity, and Control This workshop will teach participants to sing the magnificent vocal repertoire of early 20th Century Asia Minor Greek artists, as well as the heartfelt songs of later renowned Greek Rebetika performers, with authenticity and ease. We will learn to sing deliciously intricate ornamentation, complex rhythms, and microtonal scales - makam, or dhromi (roads) in Greek - in a process that is fluid and fun. By learning how to carefully listen to source recordings and then learning simple tricks to make singing the songs effortless, we'll be able to sing an involved repertoire with comfort, clarity, and control, as well as with original vocal styling. We will also learn how to seamlessly switch between vocal placements without detection, will learn how to produce optimal tone, and will learn how to phrase songs so as to provide for maximum depth of expression, artistry, and musicality. The songs have simply gorgeous melodies, and are lush with embellishment. The texts leave no stone unturned, and deal with scorching love, unbearable pain, cocaine, hashish, and heroine, lesbianism, monkey serum fountain of youth injections, harem girls, Hawaiian guitar music, and anything else one may fancy. Though the repertoire is challenging and instruction is detailed and specific, the workshop is taught in a supportive, comfortable and relaxed setting, and is always fun. Well known as a performer, researcher, and teacher of a variety of Balkan, Greek, Judaic, and other singing traditions, Carol Freeman has performed since 1970 as vocalist for The Smyrneīki Kompania, Sevda Balkan Music Ensemble, Song of the Shtetl, Village Voices, and Zhenska Pesna, and as a solo interpreter of traditional song, and has appeared at major arts centers, festivals, museums, and universities, and on radio and television, throughout North America. A master vocal instructor, Carol Freeman has taught extensively as a private instructor and at specialized arts schools, music seminars, universities, and museums since 1970. She is a 2023, 2024, and 2025 NYS Council on the Arts Master of Folk Arts. She has been actively researching, performing, and teaching Smyrnëika and Rebetika for close to five decades.

Theater in Asylum presents: 7 Deadly Sins Cabaret
Pride. Greed. Wrath. Lust. Envy. Gluttony. Sloth. These seven impulses have endured in the human imagination for thousands of years. What do they mean now? Are they sins? Are deadly? Are they escapable? For Theater in Asylum’s next cabaret, we ask artists to create a 10-20 minute original theater piece looking at the Seven Deadly Sins. Artists may focus on one or multiple of these sins, disparately or as a set. Theater in Asylum will be bringing an except from its still-gestating Faust pieces featuring the Seven Deadly Sins individually personified. More info coming soon! We’d like to thank The Puffin Foundation for their support of this project. The 7 Deadly Sins Cabaret is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council.

Stephen Kellogg's Old Friends Tour with Marc Roberge
Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $35 Marc Roberge is a songwriter and co-founder of the legendary American rock band O.A.R. Throughout nearly three decades of releasing music and touring with the band, Roberge has enjoyed scaled down, personal acoustic performances in which he can stretch out and tell the stories that give life to the songs. A Stephen Kellogg performance is like watching Ted Lasso live. Whether he’s playing music or doing stand-up, his shows leave people inspired and restored. For more than two decades, this wordsmith, Tedx speaker, stand- up comic, author and troubadour, has delighted audiences around the world. Planet Bluegrass calls him “a first class songwriter with a poet's gift for fresh imagery,” and Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz says of Kellogg, “there are few people in rock n’ roll who are just so great.” He has received the Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year award and has had his work nominated for a Grammy. Rolling Stone magazine describes his sound as “John Prine fronting the Heartbreakers.” The recent “Sit Down & Stand Up” Tour was a one man show that opened to rave reviews from fans and critics alike, culminating in a two-night filming for a forthcoming one-hour comedy special. A mix of music, humor and storytelling, each performance paints a unique canvas that covers the full spectrum of human emotions. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll go home with a full heart.

Caleb Caudle & the Sweet Critters / Nathan Xander
Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $20 adv / $25 DOS Just as the marbled salamanders emerge from under damp logs and leaves, the mushrooms—smooth, pearlescent ones and spongy morels—turn on like night lights glowing in the dark, and the long-horned beetles and regal moths begin buzzing. The fiddlehead ferns and trout lilies curl inward, a copperhead slowly swerves, and a fox steps into the moonlight looking for prey. It is here, in that restless middle of the night, under cover of darkness, where Caleb Caudle ’s sixth studio LP Sweet Critters is nestled. Through sometimes shadowy arrangements that creep and lurk, Caudle continues to mine both the brightest and murkiest corners of his imagination, finding that purest of points where tenderness and grit collide, inspired by musical heroes like Buddy Miller and Guy Clark, and mentors like Elizabeth Cook and John Paul White. It was White who Caudle tapped to produce Sweet Critters, along with Ben Tanner, at the duo’s Florence, Alabama studio Sun Drop Sound. "I was very excited to work with Caleb on this record. Iʼve been a fan for years and count him as a friend,” White says of working with Caudle. “Heʼs a stellar songwriter, so I knew heʼd bring the goods. And he did.” The album features Allison Russell, Aoife OʼDonovan, John Paul White, and Caudleʼs own touring band. These songs are a showcase of Caudle’s singular command of language. He sees the world through a hyperreal lens wholly unique to him, one that renders dank humidity “horsefly heat,” a moody sky “cast iron skillet” dark, or a loved one’s “wind chime of a smile.” For Caudle, details are the last frontier in a world where thousands of new songs are created every day. As such, he weaves his intricate tales of redemption, sacrifice, forgiveness, and loss with the colorful threads of living, breathing characters and all the rich idiosyncrasies and ephemera that fill out their worlds. Caudle and his band have played The Grand Ole Opry, Stagecoach, Cayamo, Luck Reunion, Mountain Stage, Merlefest, Americanafest, The Long Road (UK), AMAUK (UK), and recently supported Marty Stuart, Steve Earle, Hayes Carll, Elizabeth Cook, Brent Cobb, Charles Wesley Godwin, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and many more. Nathan Xander writes songs that are steeped in the quiet, restrained tension of what Greil Marcus called the ‘Old, Weird America’. The New York based songwriter has spent the last decade refining his craft across stages of all sizes, from dive bars to folk festivals; having shared bills with Justin Townes Earle, Tyler Childers, Lydia Loveless, Tommy Stinson, Robbie Fulks, and Howe Gelb of Giant Sand. Xander sorts through love, loss, and evolving identity as he stands on the threshold of a new era in his own career.

Michael Daves & Jacob Jolliff
Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm Michael Daves and Jacob Jolliff are two of America’s premier bluegrass talents. After years of collaborating in various bands and informal settings they have teamed up as a formidable duo featuring high lonesome vocal harmony and fiery flatpicking. Their sound is an homage to the classic guitar-mandolin “brother duets” while leaving plenty of room for improvisation and inspired left turns. They effortlessly straddle the line between hard-core traditional bluegrass and experimental forms. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Daves grew up playing bluegrass in the grand old tradition of staying up late & singing loud. Although he’s since moved north, the Southern roots permeate his music, however traditional or experimental. Heralded as “a leading light of the New York bluegrass scene” by the New York Times, Daves has garnered attention for his work with Chris Thile, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, Bruce Molsky and others in addition to his solo performances. His album “Sleep With One Eye Open” with Thile earned a 2011 Grammy nomination. Daves is also one of the most experienced instructors in bluegrass music, with a vocal school on ArtistWorks, presentations at many festivals, camps, and institutions including Carnegie Hall, and a private studio going back to the mid- 1990s. Jacob Jolliff has become one of the country's most notable contemporary mandolinists. He was a member of the beloved New England roots band Joy Kills Sorrow, while attending Berklee School of Music on a full scholarship. In 2012, Jolliff won the National Mandolin Championship in Winfield, KS. Now a fixture of the national bluegrass community, he has collaborated and shared the stage with Darol Anger, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Tony Trischka, and David Grisman among others. When Joy Kills Sorrow disbanded in 2014, Jolliff got the call to join Yonder Mountain String Band with whom he toured full time through 2019. In 2022 Jolliff released a self-titled Jacob Jolliff Band album and toured with Béla Fleck as part of My Bluegrass Heart. Photo credit: Aidan Grant
