An Introduction to Music Theory with Kyle Morgan - An Eight-Week Class
An Eight-Week Class with Kyle Morgan Foundations of Harmony: An Introduction to Music Theory through Schoenberg Tuesdays at 6 pm: 1/13, 1/20, 1/27, 2/3, 2/10, 2/24, 3/3, 3/10 This introductory course explores the fundamentals of music theory through the lens of Arnold Schoenberg’s Theory of Harmony , one of the 20th century’s most influential texts on tonal structure and harmonic thought. Designed for beginners, the class provides a step-by-step understanding of how chords function, connect, and create expressive musical meaning. Students will learn the basics of scales, intervals, triads, seventh chords, and harmonic progression, while developing analytical skills to interpret harmony in classical and contemporary contexts. Through guided reading, listening examples, and practical exercises, participants will gain both a technical foundation and an appreciation for Schoenberg’s philosophical approach to harmony—bridging traditional tonal practice with the ideas that shaped modern music. Prerequisites: No prior formal study of music theory required; basic ability to read musical notation is helpful but not essential. We are excited to enlarge our community and nurture our students, in that spirit, we are happy to offer you a 15% discount for bringing a friend to sign up for the first round of 2026 classes! *For financial aid and payment plans contact Lynette at Lynette@jalopytheatre.org

Kathleen Parks / Hawk in the Nest
Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $20 adv / $25 DOS Kathleen Parks is a fiddler, singer, and songwriter who brings joyful and creative energy to the stage and studio. For the last 10 years, she has been heavily involved in touring and recording with her Americana/Jamgrass band Twisted Pine, where she sings, writes, and fiddles. On her upcoming solo album, her captivating songs lean more toward Pop, Folk, and classic Jazz, while her virtuosic fiddle blends and reimagines traditional and modern musical styles with boundless groove and playful improvisational spirit. Her deep grounding in Celtic and American roots music combines with her love for pop songwriting, soulful vocals, and groove-based improvisation, making every KP performance unexpected yet familiar: a musical journey from beginning to end. Over the years, Parks has shared the stage with artists such as Paula Cole, Sammy Rae & The Friends, Gordon Lightfoot, Aoife O’Donovan, The Punch Brothers, Jerry Douglas, and Sierra Hull. On record, Hawk in the Nest is a fully complete orchestral indie pop rhythm & blues outfit, horn section and all. On paper, Hawk In The Nest is the full-band project of award winning singer-songwriter Avi Jacob, who celebrates elements of Folk, Indie Pop and Americana along with R&B. Produced with drummer Wolfgang Zimmerman (producer of Band of Horses #1 hit Crutch) & bassist Joel Hamilton, the album also features piano virtuoso Noah Jones of the Psycodelics, and Michael Quinn of Doom Flamingo on horns. It is Avi's first full length album of his career. For fans of Alabama Shakes, Ray Lamontagne, and Lake Street Dive, this carefully crafted long-player is a soulful work of art. The album is led by certified bop, "Don't leave me this way" and the tender, dreamy single, “Baby Baby Baby Baby.” Hawk in the Nest is grounded in admiration for artists like Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, and the Four Tops. With this album Avi Jacob has successfully bridged the gap between timeless and urgent, harkening back to eras of old without relying on overwhelming nostalgia. Instead, an organic approach to songwriting sees Hawk in the Nest embrace inspiration as it strikes, an artist fully stepping into his own.

Once carried from town to town by wandering bards, the Bağlama (commonly called the saz) is still the core of Turkish folk music and even modern Anatolian psychedelic rock. We are inviting you to learn to play the Bağlama from scratch. Each week, we will introduce fundamental techniques for playing this Anatolian lute through the study of classic Turkish folk songs. Start to play like Arif Sağ, Aşık Veysel, or even Altın Gün. An unparalleled introduction to Middle Eastern music and a gateway to other string instruments of the region. Open to motivated beginners and intermediate students who want to reinforce the basics. Instrument rentals available as add-on tickets when you register for the course. The instructor can assist you in purchasing your own learning instrument as well, just ask if you're interested. Ercan Alkan was born in the eastern Anatolian city of Erzurum. He has played the bağlama since being a child, having grown up with the sacred instrument in an Alevi priestly family. He is accredited by the Bağlama Academy of Arif Sağ, the greatest living master of the instrument, and has also studied in the school of Erdal Erzincan. Ercan has taught the bağlama both in Türkiye and the US, in group and private settings. Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light
8pm doors, 8:30pm show $20 adv / $25 dos Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light are a Boston-based string band making music that blends folk tradition with feminist storytelling, poetic detail, and just enough grit. At the center is Sumner’s songwriting—rooted in history, myth, and personal reckoning—carried by close harmonies, upright bass, acoustic guitar, and fiddle. The trio features Kat Wallace on fiddle and vocals and Mike Siegel on upright bass and vocals, whose playing brings both tension and tenderness to the sound. Their sound is spare and intimate, sometimes eerie, sometimes sweet, always intentional. They call it Femericana —sharp-edged Americana with a splash of feminine rage. Sumner has performed at the Library of Congress, where five of her original songs are now archived, and was a 2024 winner of the Kerrville New Folk competition. Her song “Radium Girls (Curie Eleison)” struck a nerve—streamed over 300,000 times and picked up by dancers, theater directors, and deep listeners who saw themselves in its story. It’s been tattooed on arms, sung in audition rooms, and carried into classrooms and protests. The kind of song people hold onto. Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light has toured coast to coast, bringing their spellbinding live show to listening rooms, libraries, farms, and festivals across the country. They've appeared at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Earl Scruggs Festival, IBMA, and legendary folk listening rooms like Caffé Lena and Club Passim, where their shows have become a staple of the Boston folk scene. Their latest release, The Traveling Light Sessions , reimagines Sumner’s studio album Heartless Things —recorded live around one microphone with no overdubs. Just the way they play it.

Alash Ensemble
Doors: 8:00pm Music: 8:30pm Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei), a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this gifted trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies, Western instruments and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed new ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. Alash first toured the United States under the sponsorship of the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then, they have returned many times to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning,” quipping that after the performance “audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.”

Minnie will be joined by Evan Main on piano, Aidan Cafferty on bass, and Eliza Salem on drums. Lily Talmers writes of the innate divinity in humanity from a palpably Midwestern vantage. Her lyrics are spiritual and strange—vivid images that range from sludge-covered and dismal to childlike and wondrous. Every song on It Is Cyclical, Missing You was recorded live, each song in one continuous take, often with a full band in tow, produced by Talmers herself. Lily Talmers has seen praise from NPR, No Depression, Under The Radar, and The Bluegrass Situation among others. Comprised of two of the most unique talents to come out of the acoustic music scene, drummer/singer Sean Trischka and Bluegrass guitarist/singer Stash Wyslouch are a whole greater than the sum of their parts. Satan’s Junction , their debut album to be released April 2026 weaves intimate space and luscious harmonies with bluegrass pickin', top-40 hooks, and a slew of powerful anthems to get the whole family singing. Surely a kitchen sink of sound held together by an indescribable thread of musical intimacy, humor, knowledge, and experience. They’re one of the few groups to open for Billy Strings and Mr String’s words are sure to echo in your mind after seeing this couple of rabblerousing sweethearts: “I just f*cking love those guys” - Billy Strings Sean and Stash cut their teeth playing together, both as sidemen and bandleaders, in many different bluegrass/roots/folk/rock formations since 2013: The Deadly Gentlemen, Tony Trischka’s Early Roman Kings, The Stash Band, and Corporate Punk, to name a few. Individually speaking: Jersey boy Sean Trischka is an instinctive and sought-after drummer, songwriter, and singer with a musicality that relies on warmth, pocket, and a sense of playfulness. He has collaborated with a variety of notable artists and bands including Carsie Blanton, Mipso, Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Co), Bertha AKA Grateful Drag, Lula Wiles, and The Stray Birds. Stash Wyslouch is an iconoclastic Bluegrass flatpicker whose style is instantly recognizable incorporating any and all influences. He's played with Molsky's Mountain Drifters, The Jacob Jolliff Band and shared the stage with the likes of Julian Lage, Bryan Sutton, Peter Rowan and David Grisman.

The Wilsons Springs Hotel
Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $20 adv / $25 dos Homegrown in the rich music scene of Virginia, The Wilson Springs Hotel is a 5-star quintet brought together within a union of genres - a high-energy folk act committed to rock & roll, bluegrass and classic country. Forming in 2021, the band released two albums in quick succession, while growing a steadfast audience from their fiery and memorable performances out on the road. The group is named after a historic hotel in Lexington, Virginia, home of lead vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Jacob Ritter. 2024 found the band releasing a handful of singles that showcase an even more thoughtful and driving sound. Ritter's lyrics cover a plethora of subjects, from love and loss, and one’s internal growth as a result, to the relatable woes of the modern working man. Songs such as “Pulling Weeds” (featuring sweeping melodies from fiddle player Brendan Boylan and guitarist Victor McManus), explore the struggle with repetitive mental loops, much like attempting to get nutrients out of the same-old spent garden. The bouncy, danceable, and crowd-pleasing sound of “Two Step Man” takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to noting the finer aspects of a new relationship, while being driven by a toe-tapping country shuffle courtesy of drummer Stephan LaRue and bassist/backing vocalist Andrew Carper. Through its constant growth, the band remains unwilling to conform to a single genre, as is evident in the way that this newer material celebrates the many influences instilled by the variety of sonic backgrounds each band member brings with them. Having had multiple appearances at wonderful regional festivals such as DelFest, FloydFest and Rooster Walk, it’s no secret that The Wilson Springs Hotel is best experienced in a live setting. They expertly package dynamic performances full of raw emotion, humor and storytelling, with song-by-song showcases of each player’s talents. You will undoubtedly enjoy the many lovely amenities offered to you during your stay with The Wilson Springs Hotel.

Mark Erelli
$20 ADV / $25 DOS 8:00PM DOORS 8:30PM SHOW Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Mark Erelli is a Boston-based veteran of the folk and roots music scene, renowned for his emotional honesty, craftsmanship, and warmth. Erelli exploded out of the gate in 1999 when he won the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award in the wake of his “auspicious debut” ( Billboard ), joining the ranks of previous honorees like Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith. More recently, Erelli penned the anti-gun violence song “By Degrees,” recorded in collaboration with Rosanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, and others, which garnered a nomination for Song of the Year at the 2019 Americana Honors and Awards. He followed this honor with a pair of records that drew comparisons to both Tom Petty and John Prine, as well as praise for their energy, grace, and resilience. Now, on his fourteenth solo album Spring Green , Erelli delivers his most cohesive and emotionally resonant work to date—a meditation on vulnerability, endurance, and renewal. Following 2023’s Lay Your Darkness Down , which chronicled his response to vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa, Spring Green finds Erelli in a place of hard-won peace. Co-produced with longtime collaborator Zachariah Hickman and tracked largely live over three days, the album feels fluid and organic—more watercolor painting than photographic snapshot. Its intimate sound recalls classic singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and James Taylor, prioritizing storytelling and emotional clarity over stylistic showmanship. By choosing to release Spring Green independently through Bandcamp and personally fulfilling each order, Erelli reaffirms his commitment to authentic connection over industry convention. The album stands as both an artistic statement and a survival guide—proof that true strength lies in softness, and that being wholly oneself is more than enough.
