Wilson & Walsh at the Golden Hour Series on Plaza 33

OFFSITE EVENT A free sunset music festival featuring Americana, jazz, and emerging indie acts. Curated by keystone cultural partners including Jalopy Theatre, The Jazz Gallery, New Colossus Festival and Jazz Foundation of America. Vocalist Samoa Wilson and guitarist/vocalist Sean Walsh are joined by pedal steel guitarist James Wyatt Woodall in this intimate performance of country and folk music. Wilson has captivated audiences with a voice The New York Times calls “sweet, effortless, old-timey.” Raised in the riverbed of traditional North American folk music, she came up in the Boston scene, under the wing of jug band and folk legend Jim Kweskin. Her two duos, the Four O’Clock Flowers and Fatboy Wilson & Old Viejo Bones, have become staples of the thriving New York City folk community. Born in New Jersey, Sean Walsh began his musical journey amongst the New Brunswick all-ages house show punk scene and soon married that with a growing love of classic Americana. Soon, he relocated to Brooklyn and founded the band National Reserve.

Doors 7:30pm, Show 8pm $20 adv / $25 dos Ellie MacPhee is a Brooklyn-based violinist and singer-songwriter. Kat Wallace is a Boston-based multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. Known for her fiddle playing in Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light, she’s now writing and singing her own songs on tenor guitar. Her debut album “Grand Design" marks a new chapter for Wallace, showcasing her Americana influences from legendary songwriters like Gillian Welch and John Prine, as well as centuries-old Celtic and English balladry. Elizabeth Ziman , who performs as Elizabeth and the Catapult, is a singer-songwriter from Brooklyn. She has toured with the likes of Amy Helm, Sara Bareilles and Kishi Bashi, collaborated with Esperanza Spalding, Gillian Welch, Blake Mills and Ben Folds, and scored with Paul Brill, a variety of international award-winning documentaries including “Trapped”, a Peabody winner. She won an Independent Music Award for Songwriting. Her songs have been featured in national television campaigns for Google and Amazon. Always writing, Elizabeth narrowed her vast collection of previously unrecorded material down to her fifth full-length studio album “Sincerely, E”, which she self-produced at home and released on Compass Records in March 2021. One of the singles off that album, “Together Alone”, made it onto NPR's “All Songs Considered 10 best songs of 2021” list. Foghorn Stringband

Jalopy Theatre

Foghorn Stringband

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $25 adv / $30 DOS The Foghorn Stringband is the present day gold standard for real-deal hard-hitting genuine old-time American string band music, with nine albums, thousands of shows, over 20 years of touring under their belts, and an entirely new generation of roots musicians following their lead. American roots music is a diverse and never-ending well of inspiration, and Foghorn Stringband continually and obsessively draws from old-time, bluegrass, classic country, and Cajun music traditions in an ongoing quest to present a broad span of American historical music with an unparalleled youthful energy, joy, and virtuosity. Each member of Foghorn Stringband exemplifies the best of the roots music traditions from their respective native cultures. Caleb Klauder’s wistful, keening vocals and rapidfire mandolin picking are as influenced by Southern roots music as much as they are by his upbringing in the sea islands of coastal Washington State. Reeb Willms hails from the wind swept Eastern farmlands of Washington. Her musical family and rural upbringing are on display with every note she sings and every heart she breaks. Nadine Landry’s roots lie in the rural backroads of Acadian Québec, and her high lonesome vocals have delighted audiences the world over. Her earth-shaking bass playing is the rumbling backbone of the Foghorn sound. Minnesotan Sammy Lind, simply put, is the old-time fiddler of his generation whose tone and voice are as old as the same hills that gave birth to this music. Together, these four have forged a sound like no other. The band’s repertoire has expanded greatly in the past 15 years. They are as comfortable playing music at a neighborhood square dance as they are stirring a festival audience to a frenzy. Old time dance tunes rub shoulders with Cajun waltzes, vintage honky tonk country, and classic bluegrass….and it’s all rendered into a cohesive whole. Foghorn Stringband can often be found after a performance in a local pub or club continuing to play with equal energy and joy late into the night.

Chris Acker

Chris Acker

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $20 adv / $25 dos In a genre full of tall tales and marketable lies, Chris Acker crafts candid songs – weaving his wit and woes into a body of work that exposes the stale plight of the American Songster to the honest, and sometimes hilarious, light of day. Since leaving his childhood home of Seattle, Washington, Chris Acker has called the haggard decadence of the New Orleans Americana world his purlieu. In the tradition of Guthrie and Prine, Chris lends a quavering voice to the half-rotten romance of the unremarkable and unrefined. Regardless if you’re sitting by a backyard fire on a muggy Louisiana night or standing stage-side in some far flung town, when you hear Chris Acker playing, you’re hearing the end result of countless hours of observing the masters of the craft…and the end result of repeating their mistakes. Some hard-times don’t happen behind plows, they happen behind dish-pits and cash registers. Some ramblers don’t feel the hot breath of freedom, just the smell of car exhaust and a couch for a bed. From the folk revival through the golden age of country music, deafened by punk shows and brass bands alike, Chris’s songwriting is a nod to the absurd yet muted brilliance that inhabits the molded corners of the bars he patrons and cratered street he treads, paired with a pained honesty that merits a long second look.

Bad Penny Pleasuremakers / Binoculars

7:30pm Doors, 8pm Show $20 adv / $25 DOS As the old saying goes, bad pennies have a way of turning up. In the case of The Bad Penny Pleasuremakers that’s definitely a pleasant surprise. Any old penny may bring you luck, but with these pennies you’re bound to have a wonderful time! This music making lineup is centered around the husband and wife team of Matt Bell and Joy Patterson from New Orleans. Joy handles her share of the lead vocals, plays horn-like solos on the kazookaphone (picture a bugle-shaped kazoo with plunger mute) and keeps the danceable rhythms jumping with washboard and a table full of small percussion and sound effects, while Matt plays guitar, Hawaiian guitar and sings. The Pleasuremakers’ repertoire mines nuggets from Tin Pan Alley, the Roaring 20s and the early Swing Era with a special eye to fun and humor. The novelty factor is coupled with joyful first rate musicianship, split second timing and tons of offbeat charm. Welcome to Chloë and K8A’s picnic blanket under the shade of a black walnut tree where they’ve brought a fiddle, guitar, lap steel, and a pair of binoculars to peer at long lost tunes and try them out their own way!

Ryan Lee Crosby / Todd Albright

Jalopy Theatre

Ryan Lee Crosby / Todd Albright

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm Ryan Lee Crosby is currently based in Rhode Island, but his musical heart is in Mississippi. He has released numerous albums, toured internationally and is a leading practitioner of the Bentonia School of rural Delta blues, as well as a world music explorer. Smithsonian Magazine praised his ability to "bring influences from Africa and India to the Bentonia sound." Crosby's new album "At the Blue Front" (featuring Grammy nominated bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes) offers a haunting, hypnotic meld of Bentonia and Hill Country blues. Recorded on reel to reel tape over two afternoons at Holmes’ iconic Mississippi juke joint, the album was produced, recorded and mixed by Crosby, with a selection of original compositions, traditional repertoire and fully improvised songs. Crosby finds deep inspiration and spiritual refuge in Bentonia, where he has been mentored for six years by Holmes, the man who is widely regarded as the last living master of the style. Blending reverence for tradition with a modern, trance-inducing approach, Crosby's process is informed by diverse influences that include Indian raga, ambient music and post-punk rock. For Crosby, all these seemingly disparate threads weave together through the meditative power of the blues. With collaborators Grant Smith and Jay Scheffler, At the Blue Front captures a moving journey of self-discovery, resilience, and artistic clarity. “Playing with Jimmy,” Crosby says, “it’s the joy, it’s the learning, it’s the connection and transcendence and what feels to me like a fulfillment of life’s purpose.” “What first intrigued me about Ryan Lee Crosby is how rare he is on paper: a former English major and post-punk rocker who can channel 1930s Mississippi.” - Lauren Daley — WBUR/NPR Todd Albright is a country blues, twelve-string guitar player and vocalist based in Detroit, Michigan. Grounded in the pre-war era of the blues tradition (1880-1939), Todd is a mindful purveyor of blues history. His repertoire upholds musical pillars such as Blind Willie McTell, George Carter, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly. His life’s work continues the distinguished tradition of the very roots of American music as told by the African American musicians who created it. Todd Albright joined Jack White’s Third Man Records in 2016. Todd's vigorous, gritty and soulful performances are accompanied by stories of the masters and a deep intuitive sense of respect for craft, providing audiences with a meaningful experience while creating a transcendent moment. One of the top blues guitarists in the world, Todd is the only contemporary twelve string player in his genre. Todd's first full-length LP, Fourth Floor Visitor, was released by Jett Plastic Recordings out of Detroit, Michigan (2017). His latest album, Detroit Twelve String: Blues & Rags, is out now on Third Man Records (2017). His forthcoming third album is set to be released by Third Man Records. " Many musicians can cop the notes played by blues and ragtime greats, but few contemporary guitarists are as successful at conveying the unscripted energy and driving feel of this music as Todd Albright." - Acoustic Guitar Magazine

Michael Daves & Jacob Jolliff

Michael Daves & Jacob Jolliff

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm Michael Daves and Jacob Jolliff are two of America’s premier bluegrass talents. After years of collaborating in various bands and informal settings they have teamed up as a formidable duo featuring high lonesome vocal harmony and fiery flatpicking. Their sound is an homage to the classic guitar-mandolin “brother duets” while leaving plenty of room for improvisation and inspired left turns. They effortlessly straddle the line between hard-core traditional bluegrass and experimental forms. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Daves grew up playing bluegrass in the grand old tradition of staying up late & singing loud. Although he’s since moved north, the Southern roots permeate his music, however traditional or experimental. Heralded as “a leading light of the New York bluegrass scene” by the New York Times, Daves has garnered attention for his work with Chris Thile, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, Bruce Molsky and others in addition to his solo performances. His album “Sleep With One Eye Open” with Thile earned a 2011 Grammy nomination. Daves is also one of the most experienced instructors in bluegrass music, with a vocal school on ArtistWorks, presentations at many festivals, camps, and institutions including Carnegie Hall, and a private studio going back to the mid- 1990s. Jacob Jolliff has become one of the country's most notable contemporary mandolinists. He was a member of the beloved New England roots band Joy Kills Sorrow, while attending Berklee School of Music on a full scholarship. In 2012, Jolliff won the National Mandolin Championship in Winfield, KS. Now a fixture of the national bluegrass community, he has collaborated and shared the stage with Darol Anger, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Tony Trischka, and David Grisman among others. When Joy Kills Sorrow disbanded in 2014, Jolliff got the call to join Yonder Mountain String Band with whom he toured full time through 2019. In 2022 Jolliff released a self-titled Jacob Jolliff Band album and toured with Béla Fleck as part of My Bluegrass Heart. Photo credit: Aidan Grant
