Bleecker Trading Presents Andy Friedman / Alex Battles

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $25 adv / $30 DOS A key figure in the early-2000s “Brooklyn Country” scene, Andy Friedman didn’t pick up a guitar until age 30. Less than a year later, he recorded his debut album Taken Man (2006), featuring Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor. The title track landed on the New York Post’s “207 Best Songs” list alongside Bruce Springsteen and Amy Winehouse. Scott Avett of The Avett Brothers called “Probably Shouldn’t Call,” a ballad from the album, a favorite in Vanity Fair. His 2008 follow-up, Weary Things, was named one of the year’s most overlooked albums by the Associated Press. From 2002 to 2012, Friedman toured widely. NPR called him a compelling live act, and The New Yorker praised his deep ties to American musical traditions. LA Weekly, NoDepression, and The Nashville Scene highlighted his raw, humorous, and artful voice. As a longtime cartoonist for The New Yorker, Friedman has published under his name and the pseudonym Larry Hat. His 20+ illustrated features range from visual music reviews (DJ Shadow, Pokey LaFarge) to interviews (Hank Azaria, Dave Van Ronk, Kathleen Edwards). Since 2021, Topps has released three 100-card sets of Friedman’s paintings. His 2024 set, Spotlight Baseball, which featured two short-printed cards of his old tour posters, sold out in minutes. His latest, 2025 Topps x Shoebox Treasures, sold out even quicker. Friedman’s return to Jalopy marks his first Brooklyn show in a decade. All ticket holders receive a limited-edition custom designed collectible ticket. The first 25 in the door receive a variant edition numbered to 25. A post-show signing presented by Bleecker Trading will follow. * Tickets redeemable at the venue prior to the end of the performance on 10/4 only. Unclaimed tickets will be redistributed.

Ryan Lee Crosby / Todd Albright

Jalopy Theatre

Ryan Lee Crosby / Todd Albright

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm Ryan Lee Crosby is currently based in Rhode Island, but his musical heart is in Mississippi. He has released numerous albums, toured internationally and is a leading practitioner of the Bentonia School of rural Delta blues, as well as a world music explorer. Smithsonian Magazine praised his ability to "bring influences from Africa and India to the Bentonia sound." Crosby's new album "At the Blue Front" (featuring Grammy nominated bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes) offers a haunting, hypnotic meld of Bentonia and Hill Country blues. Recorded on reel to reel tape over two afternoons at Holmes’ iconic Mississippi juke joint, the album was produced, recorded and mixed by Crosby, with a selection of original compositions, traditional repertoire and fully improvised songs. Crosby finds deep inspiration and spiritual refuge in Bentonia, where he has been mentored for six years by Holmes, the man who is widely regarded as the last living master of the style. Blending reverence for tradition with a modern, trance-inducing approach, Crosby's process is informed by diverse influences that include Indian raga, ambient music and post-punk rock. For Crosby, all these seemingly disparate threads weave together through the meditative power of the blues. With collaborators Grant Smith and Jay Scheffler, At the Blue Front captures a moving journey of self-discovery, resilience, and artistic clarity. “Playing with Jimmy,” Crosby says, “it’s the joy, it’s the learning, it’s the connection and transcendence and what feels to me like a fulfillment of life’s purpose.” “What first intrigued me about Ryan Lee Crosby is how rare he is on paper: a former English major and post-punk rocker who can channel 1930s Mississippi.” - Lauren Daley — WBUR/NPR Todd Albright is a country blues, twelve-string guitar player and vocalist based in Detroit, Michigan. Grounded in the pre-war era of the blues tradition (1880-1939), Todd is a mindful purveyor of blues history. His repertoire upholds musical pillars such as Blind Willie McTell, George Carter, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly. His life’s work continues the distinguished tradition of the very roots of American music as told by the African American musicians who created it. Todd Albright joined Jack White’s Third Man Records in 2016. Todd's vigorous, gritty and soulful performances are accompanied by stories of the masters and a deep intuitive sense of respect for craft, providing audiences with a meaningful experience while creating a transcendent moment. One of the top blues guitarists in the world, Todd is the only contemporary twelve string player in his genre. Todd's first full-length LP, Fourth Floor Visitor, was released by Jett Plastic Recordings out of Detroit, Michigan (2017). His latest album, Detroit Twelve String: Blues & Rags, is out now on Third Man Records (2017). His forthcoming third album is set to be released by Third Man Records. " Many musicians can cop the notes played by blues and ragtime greats, but few contemporary guitarists are as successful at conveying the unscripted energy and driving feel of this music as Todd Albright." - Acoustic Guitar Magazine

Smyrnëka and Rebetika with Carol Freeman - A Workshop

Smyrnëka and Rebetika Workshop with Carol Freeman Sunday November 2nd, 2-4 pm Songs of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s Urban Greek ala Turka Cafe Amans and Hashish Dens Sing Makam, Intricate Ornamentation, and Uneven Rhythms Sing with Increased Comfort, Clarity, and Control This workshop will teach participants to sing the magnificent vocal repertoire of early 20th Century Asia Minor Greek artists, as well as the heartfelt songs of later renowned Greek Rebetika performers, with authenticity and ease. We will learn to sing deliciously intricate ornamentation, complex rhythms, and microtonal scales - makam, or dhromi (roads) in Greek - in a process that is fluid and fun. By learning how to carefully listen to source recordings and then learning simple tricks to make singing the songs effortless, we'll be able to sing an involved repertoire with comfort, clarity, and control, as well as with original vocal styling. We will also learn how to seamlessly switch between vocal placements without detection, will learn how to produce optimal tone, and will learn how to phrase songs so as to provide for maximum depth of expression, artistry, and musicality. The songs have simply gorgeous melodies, and are lush with embellishment. The texts leave no stone unturned, and deal with scorching love, unbearable pain, cocaine, hashish, and heroine, lesbianism, monkey serum fountain of youth injections, harem girls, Hawaiian guitar music, and anything else one may fancy. Though the repertoire is challenging and instruction is detailed and specific, the workshop is taught in a supportive, comfortable and relaxed setting, and is always fun. Well known as a performer, researcher, and teacher of a variety of Balkan, Greek, Judaic, and other singing traditions, Carol Freeman has performed since 1970 as vocalist for The Smyrneīki Kompania, Sevda Balkan Music Ensemble, Song of the Shtetl, Village Voices, and Zhenska Pesna, and as a solo interpreter of traditional song, and has appeared at major arts centers, festivals, museums, and universities, and on radio and television, throughout North America. Brivele / A Glezele Tey

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $20 adv / $25 DOS Brivele is a Seattle-based duo who braid together Yiddish song, anti-fascist and labor balladry, folk-punk, and contemporary rabble-rousing in stirring vocal harmony. In Yiddish, Brivele ( עלעווירב ( means "little letter." Like letters, songs travel — through time and over borders. They pick up dirt, aromas, fingerprints. They are sent to lovers, they foment revolution, they get stolen and censored, burned and salvaged, sewn into our clothes. Brivele is Maia Brown and Stefanie Brendler, who journey into the archives of Yiddish anti-fascist musical tradition, bringing together anti authoritarian satire, mournful remembrances, and the disguised political commentary in folk ditties and theater classics. These songs are a correspondence: ancestors' voices speaking clearly and uncompromisingly, sometimes sweetly, to the present moment. brivele.com A Glezele Tey (Yiddish for “a little glass of tea”) invites you into their living room for a little glass of tea from the samovar, bringing audiences into an intimate and enthralling world of klezmer, Yiddish folk song, and tkhines (traditional Ashkenazi prayers centering the experiences of women, trans, and gender non-conforming people, set to new melodies). Drawing from old recordings and contemporary culture rooted in the Eastern European Jewish diaspora, A Glezele Tey’s music is an act of deep care—rooted in community gathering, lineage, and ritual, we raise our collective voices to move through grief, inspire action, and build a frayer velt (a freer world). A Glezele Tey is comprised of acclaimed klezmer musicians and composers Ariel Shapiro, Rachel Leader, and Richie Barshay. aglezeletey.com

Theater in Asylum presents: 7 Deadly Sins Cabaret

Pride. Greed. Wrath. Lust. Envy. Gluttony. Sloth. These seven impulses have endured in the human imagination for thousands of years. What do they mean now? Are they sins? Are deadly? Are they escapable? For Theater in Asylum’s next cabaret, we ask artists to create a 10-20 minute original theater piece looking at the Seven Deadly Sins. Artists may focus on one or multiple of these sins, disparately or as a set. Theater in Asylum will be bringing an except from its still-gestating Faust pieces featuring the Seven Deadly Sins individually personified. More info coming soon! We’d like to thank The Puffin Foundation for their support of this project. The 7 Deadly Sins Cabaret is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council.

Caleb Caudle & the Sweet Critters / Nathan Xander

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $20 adv / $25 DOS Just as the marbled salamanders emerge from under damp logs and leaves, the mushrooms—smooth, pearlescent ones and spongy morels—turn on like night lights glowing in the dark, and the long-horned beetles and regal moths begin buzzing. The fiddlehead ferns and trout lilies curl inward, a copperhead slowly swerves, and a fox steps into the moonlight looking for prey. It is here, in that restless middle of the night, under cover of darkness, where Caleb Caudle ’s sixth studio LP Sweet Critters is nestled. Through sometimes shadowy arrangements that creep and lurk, Caudle continues to mine both the brightest and murkiest corners of his imagination, finding that purest of points where tenderness and grit collide, inspired by musical heroes like Buddy Miller and Guy Clark, and mentors like Elizabeth Cook and John Paul White. It was White who Caudle tapped to produce Sweet Critters, along with Ben Tanner, at the duo’s Florence, Alabama studio Sun Drop Sound. "I was very excited to work with Caleb on this record. Iʼve been a fan for years and count him as a friend,” White says of working with Caudle. “Heʼs a stellar songwriter, so I knew heʼd bring the goods. And he did.” The album features Allison Russell, Aoife OʼDonovan, John Paul White, and Caudleʼs own touring band. These songs are a showcase of Caudle’s singular command of language. He sees the world through a hyperreal lens wholly unique to him, one that renders dank humidity “horsefly heat,” a moody sky “cast iron skillet” dark, or a loved one’s “wind chime of a smile.” For Caudle, details are the last frontier in a world where thousands of new songs are created every day. As such, he weaves his intricate tales of redemption, sacrifice, forgiveness, and loss with the colorful threads of living, breathing characters and all the rich idiosyncrasies and ephemera that fill out their worlds. Caudle and his band have played The Grand Ole Opry, Stagecoach, Cayamo, Luck Reunion, Mountain Stage, Merlefest, Americanafest, The Long Road (UK), AMAUK (UK), and recently supported Marty Stuart, Steve Earle, Hayes Carll, Elizabeth Cook, Brent Cobb, Charles Wesley Godwin, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and many more. Nathan Xander writes songs that are steeped in the quiet, restrained tension of what Greil Marcus called the ‘Old, Weird America’. The New York based songwriter has spent the last decade refining his craft across stages of all sizes, from dive bars to folk festivals; having shared bills with Justin Townes Earle, Tyler Childers, Lydia Loveless, Tommy Stinson, Robbie Fulks, and Howe Gelb of Giant Sand. Xander sorts through love, loss, and evolving identity as he stands on the threshold of a new era in his own career.

Michael Daves & Jacob Jolliff

Michael Daves & Jacob Jolliff

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm Michael Daves and Jacob Jolliff are two of America’s premier bluegrass talents. After years of collaborating in various bands and informal settings they have teamed up as a formidable duo featuring high lonesome vocal harmony and fiery flatpicking. Their sound is an homage to the classic guitar-mandolin “brother duets” while leaving plenty of room for improvisation and inspired left turns. They effortlessly straddle the line between hard-core traditional bluegrass and experimental forms. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Daves grew up playing bluegrass in the grand old tradition of staying up late & singing loud. Although he’s since moved north, the Southern roots permeate his music, however traditional or experimental. Heralded as “a leading light of the New York bluegrass scene” by the New York Times, Daves has garnered attention for his work with Chris Thile, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, Bruce Molsky and others in addition to his solo performances. His album “Sleep With One Eye Open” with Thile earned a 2011 Grammy nomination. Daves is also one of the most experienced instructors in bluegrass music, with a vocal school on ArtistWorks, presentations at many festivals, camps, and institutions including Carnegie Hall, and a private studio going back to the mid- 1990s. Jacob Jolliff has become one of the country's most notable contemporary mandolinists. He was a member of the beloved New England roots band Joy Kills Sorrow, while attending Berklee School of Music on a full scholarship. In 2012, Jolliff won the National Mandolin Championship in Winfield, KS. Now a fixture of the national bluegrass community, he has collaborated and shared the stage with Darol Anger, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Tony Trischka, and David Grisman among others. When Joy Kills Sorrow disbanded in 2014, Jolliff got the call to join Yonder Mountain String Band with whom he toured full time through 2019. In 2022 Jolliff released a self-titled Jacob Jolliff Band album and toured with Béla Fleck as part of My Bluegrass Heart. Photo credit: Aidan Grant
