MED-REN-KLEZ-JAM

MED-REN-KLEZ-JAM Sun, 04 Jan 2026 7-10pm Avery Gosfield, Renaissance winds Eléonore Weill: winds, voice, hurdy-gurdy Sarah Meyerson: voice, percussion Ilya Shneeweys: Accordion, guitar, wind instruments, percusssion. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND - MED-REN-KLEZ-JAM! MED-REN-KLEZ - CONCERT (7 – 8:30pm) When a Medieval and Renaissance roots music expert like Avery Gosfield (recorder, percussion,) gets together with four of Brooklyn’s finest interpreters of Yiddish, Klezmer and Eastern European (but not only) music: French vocalist multi-instrumentalist Eleonore Weill, and the astonishingly talented accordion (and nearly everything else) player Ilya Shneyveys, singer and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Myerson, and singer, virtuoso fiddler and Yiddishist Eléonore Elzi Biezunski, you know you’re in for an evening of astonishing, unpredictable sounds. The concept is not so much “World” as “Time” music - jumping through the ages, fusing old and new rhythms, tunes, and styles (with plenty of improvisation thrown in for good luck) making new sounds from old stuff. Because, in the end, it doesn’t matter from where or when the music comes from, as long as it makes you want to dance. KLEZ-JAM (ca. 8:30 – 10pm) Bring your instruments along for a Klezmer Jam Session led by multi-instrumentalist Ilya Shneyveys with a few medieval and traditional French songs thrown in… Born in Philadelphia, based in Europe, Avery Gosfield has been playing and researching Medieval and Renaissance Roots Music - the tunes that the normal people might have played, sung or danced to in the Renaissance – ever since she can remember. In 2004, this research led her to some unknown Jewish poems, which she set to old music, pursuing the early-Jewish link with passion. With her early music group Lucidarium, she has played in most of the major Early and Jewish music festivals of Europe and North America. Sarah Myerson is an ordained cantor actively working to connect egalitarian Jewish religious with secular/cultural Yiddish communities. She serves as the Kol Bo Spiritual Leader of Roosevelt Island Jewish Congregation and lives in Brooklyn, New York. She teaches Yiddish song workshops and Yiddish dance workshops worldwide (for example at Yiddish New York and Yiddish Summer Weimar) and online; leads Yiddish dance, composes and performs as a multi-instrumentalist in a variety of musical settings. She has a Master’s and Hazzan Diploma from the JTS, and a Bachelor of Music (Composition Honors) from the Sydney Conservatorium. Ilya Shneyveys (accordion/piano) is an international performer, accordionist and multi- instrumentalist, teacher, composer, arranger and producer of contemporary Jewish music, from klezmer and Yiddish folk song to fusion and experimental projects. Long-time faculty member at Yiddish Summer Weimar, he is the artistic director of the Yiddish psychedelic rock band Forshpil and the Caravan Orchestra, for which he was awarded the 2017 Shimon- Peres-Prize.Originally from Riga, Latvia, Ilya has been traveling the world for the last 15 years promoting Yiddish music and culture and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. French vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Eléonore Weill is acclaimed for her soulful interpretations of Yiddish, East European and French traditional music. Hailing from a musical family in Southern France and now based in Brooklyn, Weill performs and records in a variety of ensembles, from klezmer to Romanian and Occitan folk music. Performing on recorder, wooden flutes, piano, accordion and hurdy-gurdy, Weill’s music is informed by her conviction that traditional songs have great power to create social change.

PURCHASE TICKETS HERE A Wall-to-Wall Immersion in Caribbean and African Diaspora Ritual Art and Cultural Continuity. Step into a dynamic convergence of Caribbean and African Diaspora ritual arts. Witness the African Cosmogram come alive in Brooklyn—reserve your seat now. On Friday, January 17th, from 6:00–8:30 PM , Blue Mango Arts and Jalopy Theatre & School of Music present Se7en Paintings + Libation at 315 Columbia Street, Brooklyn . This event launches a special Fundraising Series and represents a meaningful co-curated production between two organizations committed to cultural continuity, diversity, and inclusion. This evening is an intentional act of restoration—centering ritual practice, ancestral knowledge, and the cultural memory we carry. The convergence of artistic practice and communal wellbeing is not symbolic; it is transformative. It brings us back to what shapes us, heals us, and holds us together. The experience begins inside artist Bernard Hoyes ’ spiritually charged installation with a traditional libation ceremony. Se7en Paintings + Libation invokes the African Cosmogram—the through-line connecting Caribbean and African Diaspora ritual practices to a shared African root. This becomes the grounding force of the evening. Each painting is reimagined as a living tableau through ritual dance, drumming, and storytelling. Hoyes’ bold, colorful imagery lifts from the canvas and becomes a sweeping performance of history, resilience, and ancestral presence. The work honors the African pantheon of spirits—a constellation of forces shaping cosmology across the continent and throughout the Diaspora. The evening concludes with a conversation with Bernard Hoyes, who shares the cultural and spiritual narratives that animate his practice. Se7en Paintings + Libation opens Blue Mango Arts’ Fundraising Series—an entry point into ancestral homage, cultural retention, and the living traditions that define our collective heritage. There is still so much for us to reclaim within Caribbean American and African Diaspora cultural arts. Let us gather side by side, honoring the threads that bind us across generations and across the Diaspora. Join us for an evening of wall-to-wall culture, art, and community. Proceeds support Blue Mango Arts and the Jalopy presentation of Se7en Paintings. Additionally, 30% of funds raised will support Hampton School in Jamaica for Hurricane Melissa Relief.

The duo’s 2022 sophomore album, Hurricane Clarice reflects history, family, literature, live performance, and environmental instability in the sounds, feelings, and sensations that permeate their music. The album won “Best Instrumental Group of the Year” and “Best Traditional Album of the Year” from the Canadian Folk Music Awards and also received a Juno nomination for “Traditional Roots Album of the Year.” Their first self-titled album released in 2019 garnered attention from CBC Q, Paste Magazine and Rolling Stone Country, earning the duo the Independent Music Awards “Best Bluegrass Album” and a nomination from IBMA for “Best Liner Notes of the Year.” The duo has performed at festivals and venues such as Newport Folk Festival, Savannah Music Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC, and Red Wing Roots Music Festival. Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves create a sound that is adventurous, masterful, and original, as they expand on the eccentricities of old songs, while never losing sight of what makes them endure.

Joel Veena: Ragas & Sagas with Mir Naqibul Islam

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $20 adv / $25 dos Award-winning artist of the 20-stringed Hindustani slide guitar, Joel Veena, presents 'Ragas & Sagas' - a special concert featuring traditional ragas, original compositions set in the brilliant tradition of south Asian music alongside fascinating tales from the lore of Hindustani (North Indian) music. The performance at Jalopy Theatre will feature two sets: one acoustic, ragas, and one electric, sagas, featuring Joel's new electric set combining electric guitar, bass, his unique modified slide guitar and live looping. Tabla virtuoso and founder of the NYC Tabla School, Mir Naqibul Islam accompanies the concert with his signature style of crisp articulation and emotive improvisation. Mir and Joel have been close collaborators since 2019 (when they first performed together at Jalopy itself), having recorded together for Joel's latest album CARDINAL , and concertgoers can enjoy the seamless interplay of performers deeply familiar with other's work. “The late great George Harrison may have brought this musical spirit into the Western mainstream, but Veena takes Indian guitar right back to its roots, sharing the cathartic charm of North Indian ragas with global ears.” - A & R Factory.

The Wilsons Springs Hotel

Jalopy Theatre

The Wilsons Springs Hotel

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm $20 adv / $25 dos Homegrown in the rich music scene of Virginia, The Wilson Springs Hotel is a 5-star quintet brought together within a union of genres - a high-energy folk act committed to rock & roll, bluegrass and classic country. Forming in 2021, the band released two albums in quick succession, while growing a steadfast audience from their fiery and memorable performances out on the road. The group is named after a historic hotel in Lexington, Virginia, home of lead vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Jacob Ritter. 2024 found the band releasing a handful of singles that showcase an even more thoughtful and driving sound. Ritter's lyrics cover a plethora of subjects, from love and loss, and one’s internal growth as a result, to the relatable woes of the modern working man. Songs such as “Pulling Weeds” (featuring sweeping melodies from fiddle player Brendan Boylan and guitarist Victor McManus), explore the struggle with repetitive mental loops, much like attempting to get nutrients out of the same-old spent garden. The bouncy, danceable, and crowd-pleasing sound of “Two Step Man” takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to noting the finer aspects of a new relationship, while being driven by a toe-tapping country shuffle courtesy of drummer Stephan LaRue and bassist/backing vocalist Andrew Carper. Through its constant growth, the band remains unwilling to conform to a single genre, as is evident in the way that this newer material celebrates the many influences instilled by the variety of sonic backgrounds each band member brings with them. Having had multiple appearances at wonderful regional festivals such as DelFest, FloydFest and Rooster Walk, it’s no secret that The Wilson Springs Hotel is best experienced in a live setting. They expertly package dynamic performances full of raw emotion, humor and storytelling, with song-by-song showcases of each player’s talents. You will undoubtedly enjoy the many lovely amenities offered to you during your stay with The Wilson Springs Hotel.

Mark Erelli

Jalopy Theatre

Mark Erelli

$20 ADV / $25 DOS 8:00PM DOORS 8:30PM SHOW Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Mark Erelli is a Boston-based veteran of the folk and roots music scene, renowned for his emotional honesty, craftsmanship, and warmth. Erelli exploded out of the gate in 1999 when he won the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award in the wake of his “auspicious debut” ( Billboard ), joining the ranks of previous honorees like Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith. More recently, Erelli penned the anti-gun violence song “By Degrees,” recorded in collaboration with Rosanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, and others, which garnered a nomination for Song of the Year at the 2019 Americana Honors and Awards. He followed this honor with a pair of records that drew comparisons to both Tom Petty and John Prine, as well as praise for their energy, grace, and resilience. Now, on his fourteenth solo album Spring Green , Erelli delivers his most cohesive and emotionally resonant work to date—a meditation on vulnerability, endurance, and renewal. Following 2023’s Lay Your Darkness Down , which chronicled his response to vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa, Spring Green finds Erelli in a place of hard-won peace. Co-produced with longtime collaborator Zachariah Hickman and tracked largely live over three days, the album feels fluid and organic—more watercolor painting than photographic snapshot. Its intimate sound recalls classic singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and James Taylor, prioritizing storytelling and emotional clarity over stylistic showmanship. By choosing to release Spring Green independently through Bandcamp and personally fulfilling each order, Erelli reaffirms his commitment to authentic connection over industry convention. The album stands as both an artistic statement and a survival guide—proof that true strength lies in softness, and that being wholly oneself is more than enough.
