During these sessions, we will work on songs in both a large ensemble and in two smaller bands. At the end of the last class, we will host a song share with sign up open to the public, and kick off the night with the repertoire we’ve worked up as a group. Along the way, we'll work on musicianship and ensemble skills, tackling performance nerves, and just have fun! Repertoire will be a range of songs that lend themselves to band arrangements. If you have song suggestions, please offer them! All instruments are welcome! However, if you play a non-string instrument (piano, drums, woodwinds, etc.), please contact Caroline prior to enrollment to make sure we can accommodate your instrument at the school. Chord-based Instrumentalists will need to be able to read and play simple chord progressions. Vocalists and melodic instrumentalists will need to be able to match pitch and learn melodies by ear. Learning Banjo Tunes on the Fly with Anna Roberts-Gevalt - A Workshop
A Workshop with Anna Roberts-Gevalt Saturday, November 1, 11 AM - 1 PM Often, we learn by slowing things down, breaking tunes down into small parts and gradually speeding up, However, for this class, we're going to approach things from the opposite direction, and focus on sharpening the skills of learning tunes "at speed" - on the fly! This is a real-world skill set it's great to have when you are a jam setting, listening to a recording, or learning a tune from a fiddler without hearing a banjo "version" of it. It can be stressful and overwhelming to try to join in when you have no idea how the tune goes! Anna will break down some of the steps and skills for this process, including: - identifying common patterns/fingerings in the different tunings (and patterns to practice at home!) - listening skills that help you understand what you are hearing -- keeping track of (and remembering) the different parts of a tune - making a simple bare-bones version of a tune when it's new (and how to gradually add detail to it!) We'll also work on some background rhythm licks and chords to play/support the fiddler with as you're figuring the tune out. To inquire about scholarship/financial aid, please email lynette@jalopytheatre.org. The Jalopy Theatre is fully ADA accessible, including wheelchair-accessible bathrooms. The Theatre is also equipped with large circulating fans that have UV air cleaners to help create a safer indoor environment.
